PODCAST TRANSCRIPT
all right browncast episode four episode four uh we're pretty much internet
0:13
famous at this point they true professionals know yep um I was at the grocery store the other day and someone
0:19
came up to me and was like hey are you Garrett from Crown cast and I was like
0:24
yeah Mom I'm your son love you Mom I mean we get we're getting views from our
0:30
moms and parents yep and our employees so according to our employees the
0:35
podcast is blowing up it's huge it's massive but yeah so here we are again uh
0:42
Crown cast So today we're going to go through a project um that we just finished last week actually well it's
0:48
half we finished and it's it was a new PA new
0:53
console clean up a rack and they had two different rooms and we'll just look at one of the rooms today they're
0:59
contemporary room that's the that's the happening room yeah that's where all the uh the Sinners go yeah let me uh paint
1:07
the picture of where this place is right so this is a different kind of setup um
1:12
for us it's in a town called Sun City and you're allowed to drive golf carts
1:17
on the road in this town it's mandatory actually it is very Florida it is very set up and planned for the elderly
1:24
Community to go there and retire and that is what the town is I mean yeah the whole I mean other people live there too
1:30
but it is obviously the majority of the people there are are retired or or
1:36
elderly people right hence the golf carts and you know the road systems and
1:41
everything so this church is at is in Sun City um and we got a call from them
1:48
probably at least a year ago because it's another thing with this job it got really delayed but um when they first
1:55
called it's not our typical you know blow
2:01
mega church LED walls and such um yeah different different flavor yeah United Methodist Church Sun City um and not
2:09
just a Methodist Church but a Methodist Church in Sun City so uh not targeting them at all but it
2:15
really is like their congregation is are old old people right and that's who lives there and they said we do tons of
2:21
events here and we have parties all the time and concerts and shows and we're like okay you know I guess and but they
2:28
really do so that's it's like a it's like a Christian version of The Village The Villages it is it is and I I guess
2:36
they really do I mean they have they have stuff there all the time um yep every time I've been there there's just
2:41
been a lineup of people waiting to come in there have been way more people there
2:47
than I've that I've expected when I just go there when we were installing right they're do people everywhere they're doing something right they're reaching
2:54
the community people are coming out they have all these cool events going on yeah if you're in that Community then you
3:00
should do stuff that those people are going to go to that makes the most sense so regardless of all that they they
3:06
needed an upgrade of their of their AV systems because they do have all these events all the time right and they also
3:12
have service church services on the weekends and uh there's a bunch of people there for the launch for the
3:17
opening of this contemporary room MH like you said there's two different kind of Auditorium rooms there like a
3:24
contemporary Auditorium then more like a sanctuary area and we had to them in
3:30
backto back weeks y so last week was the contemporary room the rock and roll room right and then uh this week the guys
3:37
currently right now are in the main Auditorium which is more traditional right big uh you know what do we call it
3:45
there's pipe organs there I don't know if it works or not but there are pipes there the room is a Hershey Kiss the
3:51
Hershey Kiss building youve prob SE her kiss is really tough to work inside of yeah and big beams landed floors pews
4:00
right kind of a lot a lot of our nightmares as far as installation goes yeah uh yeah raised or angled
4:07
seating nice everything in our way you know nice ceiling that's not it's not blacked out right it's not the contary
4:13
room it's a it's a it's a sanctuary or whatever so it's wood ceilings so you can't hide cables easily it's a lot of a
4:20
lot of challenges but yeah so last week was a contemporary room so we went in
4:25
there and did that and then this week the guys are on site right now uh finishing up up this other room and um
4:32
after this podcast I'm going to go tune that system yeah and it's kind of cool because we did a tip a similar system
4:39
for both rooms they had a budget that we had to try and work inside of but they wanted to update their audio that was the biggest thing they had some old
4:45
stuff and we'll look at it here um and really old stuff and not cool stuff so
4:53
we were able to do a similar PA in both rooms uh different size speakers that we'll go through um and and look at yeah
5:01
we upgraded their audio console too I don't know if you said that I think maybe you did and we're doing some lighting stuff too oh that's right but
5:07
yeah they were very um they wanted to keep the systems the same in both rooms if possible because they have a limited
5:13
staff and they work with a bunch of volunteers right and um so they want to be able to jump from room to room and
5:19
know the systems so same audio console in both same lighting stuff in both right pretty much the same PA just a
5:25
little different size but right same micro we did a bunch of microphones too right yeah so this yeah these projects
5:30
are a little bit different than what we're used to yeah uh but quality is quality sound is sound it's got to sound
5:38
good it's got to sound clear it's got to sound to some degree powerful I mean they're not going to you know they're
5:43
not going to be pushing anyone out the room with their subs but uh it it end up
5:49
sounding good in that contemporary room yeah and we I mean it's not like that a gigantic budget but we still want to try
5:56
to do the best we try to do the best with the money that we have right and and some and so in cases like this we'll
6:02
use uh different products right that we're that we don't normally use just just to save some money but still we
6:07
research those things and try to figure out if it's going to work and if it's going to be quality for them right you
6:12
know to meet their needs but not everybody's going to have this you know massive budget and big mega church building so yep find ways to do it but
6:21
we can adapt and overcome and we do and we do every time so uh yeah let's uh
6:27
let's jump into it you want to go to a commercial break uh also like And subscribe yeah we don't say that enough
6:33
we don't say that enough um my kids say it yeah my kids the language they know
6:40
my kids generation is going to be so messed up dude I'm telling you like my boy is like YouTube kids come to life
6:48
everything's just like hey like And subscribe click and subscribe it's emotes and all the you know they love it
6:55
they love it yeah they know the lingo yeah so like And subscribe we'd love to get more uh get this out there if it's
7:01
helpful if it's educational if it's entertaining if it's whatever it is I don't I don't even know what you call it
7:07
Crown cast um but yeah here's our uh commercial sponsor AVL systems are great
7:13
when they work and a nightmare when they don't well we've come up with a solution for when they don't Crown care is our
7:20
subscription-based service program where you get 247 support 24/7 critical system
7:26
monitoring and a host of other goodies if you're interested in Crown care please give us a call or contact us
7:31
through our [Music]
7:41
website all right we're back and we're back wow thank you so much our sponsor foring oh amazing work save my life this
7:49
weekend uh Crown care doelp just change my life yeah had to use it to use it
7:55
personally absolutely on my home system all right so where are we this project what is this project where is this
8:01
project who is this project so we talked a little bit about it but again United Methodist Church in Sun
8:07
City um that's a large organization obviously they have churches all over the country we're we're in tight with
8:14
the United Methodist we've done a lot of them yeah it's good people yeah we've done a lot and that word kind of spreads
8:19
through it because they are all connected right um so yeah we end up we end up working with them a lot which is great it's been great um but yeah
8:27
they're in Sun City it's an old building I shouldn't say old it probably is old it's been around probably been there for
8:33
a long time but it's not like it was decrepit or anything I it's just an older building right um and very
8:39
happening place in Sun City with all the elderly people right like a lot of people going there yep and they wanted
8:45
to do major overhaul of their AV systems right specifically most importantly
8:50
their pa their sound yep and if we could squeeze anything else out of it they wanted some lighting yep and so that's
8:55
what we did um the first building that we did was the contemporary room yep
9:01
which is kind of more our Vibe uh it's you know blacked out ceiling and um a
9:06
square room and a flat floor and seats you know the typical modern kind of church why which is why they have that
9:11
contemporary Vibe going on in there for this type of service yeah let's take a look I got some pictures of the room uh
9:17
before the the uh the install so here it is just pretty you know this is
9:23
obviously a multi-purpose room it has it had or has or I don't know if they use it anymore but room dividers that
9:29
wouldn't work out very well with the stage but uh they have it here um but
9:35
we've only seen it open like this so you can see here just pretty typical re rectangle rectangle
9:42
room um and they had what I think just a couple 12in point source so I think they
9:48
had four trying to get the width of the room this is their front of house section uh bit of a mess we did some
9:54
cleaning up we moved some racks around gave him a little room I mean look at that front house console and that rack
10:00
yeah it is you have be very very skinny to skinny mixing to get behind that
10:06
console and we all know you ain't you're not a front of house engineer unless you have a couple extra pounds on you that's
10:12
just what it comes with the territory so what what are we supposed to do here we need to make room for our sound
10:18
engineer um so yeah that was here it is that's this is the old Workhorse the GLD
10:24
80 Allen Heath yep and uh it's it's bigger brother got put in by us so this
10:31
this guy was old it looks like it's old it looks like it's taken a little bit of a a licking yeah um these consoles were
10:38
pretty cool though I mean for early earlier digital consoles like they did well yeah you know they had everything
10:44
in it and they have their quirks um but we've been taking a lot of them out that's
10:51
true we've been putting in advantes and D lives Y and and these are all paper weights now unfortunately I mean you can
10:57
still use them for a bunch of stuff but um who knows what they do what they are going to use that for but uh yeah this
11:04
the rack so you can see some other Legacy alen Heath stuff in there um look at those cables just
11:12
random yeah we cleaned all that up mve that stuff but um put in network for
11:17
them so that they have a little bit more network uh capabilities but yeah let's take a quick look at the room I've got
11:23
uh it's got a a model that we were working off of
11:29
like that boom so if you see it just I guess more square but yeah the seating area got a
11:37
little weird because they actually ended up putting seats on these sides here so let's just take a look but this is what
11:43
this is the uh the model that we Ed to kind of make sure you know sound and speakers and locations it's got to be in
11:49
a good spot for sound so that you get the appropriate coverage but I mean you got to watch out for Sight lines and
11:55
everything too y so this is what we use for that um um you can see here we have
12:02
our projected system which end up being some tops uh some point source line
12:08
arrays uh some subs on the floor this whole stage was concrete so we couldn't get under it couldn't do anything with it so we had to move the subs into like
12:16
the most inconspicuous location for them which it worked um some side fills for
12:22
the seating on the side and some front fills for some people that are way up close here but that was the idea and um
12:29
um that's essentially what happened so uh first off we we went through a couple different
12:34
speaker manufacturers we tried to find them something at the time this install
12:40
was going to happen fast yeah we like I said we they contacted us probably an hour an hour ago a year ago that be
12:47
really fast about a year ago and they had their budget already ready and they were ready to go right away and they
12:54
wanted to do it really quick and so we did a number of designs I think we did an we did an l Acoustics set up for them
13:00
it was just it couldn't hit the budget it was too much um did a couple other things too and then um and then it kind
13:08
of morphed that job morphed it started with only this room that's how it started just a temporary room oh okay
13:14
and then and morphed into two could we somehow get both rooms and we were already kind of Smashing the budget we were like oh man how are we going to
13:20
pull this off so then we went deep and started uh researching some other stuff
13:26
and ended up on this jblp and some Sennheiser microphones and like you said an
13:33
advantis console in this in this room yep and then some Network upgrades and then a lot of cleanup we didn't touch
13:39
their projection system in here no we didn't do anything um we didn't touch any other Lighting in here other than we
13:45
put in Vista we put in a a new software for control for them they kept all the lights we didn't even we just kind of
13:51
put in a new control system for them and all their stuff stayed in the same place right we put some DSP in yep for some uh
13:59
some of the speaker management y uh and also some digital snakes for them
14:05
correct for Io on the stage Y and and and their main rack y so those
14:11
were Avantis and then dx68 yep
14:17
so okay well that's the way it was supposed to look and it pretty much ended up looking exactly like that yeah
14:23
it did let's take a look um who would have thought from rendering
14:28
to re here's uh here's some install picks uh here's a video so there it is
14:34
Boom there's the the actual speaker is in the air rigged to
14:40
fly Subs on the floor yep front fils it's kind of crazy they had a concrete
14:47
stage in that room yeah like that but they cleaned all this up too they had a bunch of stuff up here this is not our
14:52
fault people yeah uh they cleaned it up this was one of those we weren't doing the whole room kind of jobs yeah those
14:59
are always a little bit weird like we're like how far do we take it how much stuff do we actually do
15:06
right this was me uh tuning the system just trying to show it's smart out so
15:13
yeah that's the room uh exactly like the rendering every everything's there exactly the same so
15:20
it happened people this calibration mic in the center of the room just this was uh just
15:26
during that process of of tuning um it was my first time tuning this
15:31
system I we had done we had put these speakers in somewhere else uh and we're going to get into them in a second here
15:38
um that's in the middle of the room I think that's the trace in the middle of the room yeah we
15:45
uh let me see we put these same speakers in another church uh a couple months ago
15:51
uh I didn't tune it though Luke tuned it uh I actually didn't get there I didn't get to go listen to it the final product
15:58
you did yep I had heard these speakers prior I had gone to a a demo at
16:03
full sale uh Shout Out full sale taking all my money uh but we did a demo there and got
16:11
to hear these um and they sounded pretty good and I I could tell when I heard him in the demo that um that I think there I
16:19
was like you know there's something there I think it needs a little bit of tuning though and I'm like I think we could get it to somewhere that is our
16:26
style or acceptability to our clients and so this is the first time that I got
16:32
to tune the system and hear it the way that we put these systems together and hear it with uh sources through it and
16:38
all that stuff on our own yeah and it's we always have to balance money so we
16:44
listen to speakers and we're a bit audio snobs um audio files big time so we can
16:50
we listen to speakers and and then you you find out how much it cost and then you decide how good it is I that's what
16:56
my brain does right it's like if you this next to like a Meer or an L Acoustics or something obviously you
17:02
would pick the Meer L Acoustics right um but if you put it by itself and say it
17:07
costs x amount of dollars and you can have this in your room then you then you're like okay yeah that's much better
17:13
than whatever you know buying something on online somewhere just some Randomness right there's a there's a quality that
17:21
you just have to pay for yeah there's some speakers there's like the the big three Meyer D&B L Acoustics and you
17:28
can't go wrong with any of them they sound great and you have to pay for them then there's like the middle of the road
17:34
guys that they're all competing for this this medium uh uh budget number Y and
17:42
that's what I'd put these guys in and that Medium budget number is a pretty hot Market oh yeah I mean because
17:48
everybody wants the top three y they all want that great and we get the we get the opportunity of putting those systems
17:54
in a lot we love it and we try to push clients that way cuz it is worth it y
17:59
but if you can't do it then we have to go down a notch and then we enter this middle world where yeah it is very
18:06
competing and there's a there's a lot of products so like top three is like top three right there's only like three you
18:11
can really choose from go in the middle I mean there's a lot of other companies I mean there's like there's Adamson I
18:18
mean there the list goes on and everyone's competing all in the same spots but typically you know what the
18:23
top boys are doing and then you know what the mid boys are doing and then we just don't even deal with the low
18:29
we we don't we don't touch them yeah I can't sleep I wouldn't be able to sleep in we don't use the middle guys a whole
18:35
lot either I mean we really try because the importance of audio is is just such a big thing especially in churches and
18:41
production and stuff so we really try to push that way and if we can't do it then yes we join the middle group and then we
18:48
go and find out you know what's what's the best for the room I guess and this is where we ended up on on this job yeah
18:55
sound and hearing is one of our few senses that we have it's it's worth making it good a good one you know yeah you got to pay for it
19:02
though you got to pay for it okay so let's actually let's dive into these speakers let's do a quick review I want
19:08
to do a review of the speakers what they claim and then I'm going to talk about
19:14
uh my experience tuning it and what I how I felt actually in the room and listen this is just my my opinion which
19:22
uh is exactly right but uh yeah different rooms different
19:28
styles different everything but um I I got a pretty good bead on what these
19:33
speakers are so all right Ben what speakers did we fly in the Contemporary room at Sun City Center you so the main
19:41
yeah the main PA we use the SRX 906 la which is the line array speaker all
19:49
right has a dual 6-in speaker in it um they're powered their uh rigging system is
19:57
pretty nice um actually it goes together really well the guys really like it yep it's got like those first two clicks on
20:03
the on the front of the speaker and then you kind of just push the back up and there's that connection on the back mhm
20:09
and you can easily see your degrees on that back section um so you can know
20:15
your pin out for your rigging so that makes it a lot easier and some speakers manufacturers that's very confusing yes
20:22
I mean it's like all right in this configuration you turn it this way but then in this configuration you got to take that bar out turn it upside down
20:29
down the angles change the degrees change to try and give us more and more degrees of separation and and options
20:35
but it becomes very confusing for us right us uh us dllm minded
20:41
integrators this was not I mean this is printed on there very nicely and bright the guys really liked it they put it together quickly and easy some of these
20:48
manufacturers these speaker manufacturers expect us to know every little thing about their product they put so much time into it but we're just
20:54
dealing with so many products that like you cannot remember every little pin thing every it's wild yeah you're not
20:59
building these they expect you to remember though it's like dude my life is only so long so that's the yeah there
21:06
it is in the array form right um we used the rigging system as well with it that top bar piece yep and that was nice too
21:13
you know through the software you kind of it gives you the hole gives you the pick Point yep and I can show you I can
21:19
show you some of that software and that that'll control your angle of the array so yeah it went together really well they are um compact yeah pretty small
21:27
form factor so they were easy to I mean easy to work with there a good size for this room right they claim here's what
21:34
they claim then you can talk about it okay here's their highlights ready best
21:40
inclass performance so absolutely like we said this middle of the range world
21:46
is such a such a competing class here so they're claiming best-in-class performance sometimes they create a new
21:52
class to say that though just FYI their JBL transducer technology delivers class
21:58
leading Sonic performance Superior dynamic range Superior all right I love
22:04
it they have an they have they claim to have an Innovative acoustical design yep
22:09
so that's their two- range speaker that they claim is with their with the uh
22:14
single horn in there um their power solution they claim as topnotch as well
22:21
which is a classy amplification in in the speaker it's a powered speaker mhm
22:26
and then they claim that this is line as is a complete system which I would agree this line is a complete system they have
22:32
internal and internal DSP yeah yeah yeah they have it's it's a cool
22:38
little system man it's got like every little they thought through the accessories they thought through the the different types of deployments um as
22:45
we're going through pictures of this you know uh sub you know or this is like a that little Chariot kind of thing and
22:50
you know yeah you can put put two over a sub four over two subs like you know
22:56
this is a very uh versatile system they they thought through uh real real well I
23:02
like it y um and so yeah they also had
23:08
so so we did four of these per side yep then we did two of their 18inch subs uh
23:16
in the same in the same uh family the per side the SRX 918 s which is an
23:23
18-inch sub those also have um internal DSP networking
23:29
they claim a lot of the same things best-in-class performance yep on their sub they claim that they are
23:34
configurable that you can basically make this a cardioid array I don't know if this is true but you can make this a
23:40
cardioid array by simply changing the Selections in the presets yeah okay so
23:47
that's something that they claim with a sub yep it's a powered sub as well and
23:53
they're still claiming that this is a complete system which believe that it is absolutely yeah so this these speakers
23:59
they actually come with a couple different softwares to use uh to help you um do some pre-planning help you
24:05
identify any issues and and what the speaker going to be doing in the room so uh the first
24:12
software if I can pull it up here if I can find it um is
24:18
La where's it at here there it
24:23
is Boom you see that okay yeah yep so uh so
24:29
here's the first software that you can put in your your uh your listening planes your ground uh just kind of on
24:37
this uh side elevation model and you can put in your PA and choose you know which
24:45
which speaker it is um they have a little bit they have um some Auto uh
24:52
spaying to help you identify the angles to take care of the room and then you
24:58
can kind of put a couple mics on there like I like I did here and see the traces and it's um you know it ain't no
25:04
map or uh sound Vision but it get you know helps you it it helps you make the decisions as to what how how large an
25:11
array you need for a certain size of a room this one gives you the pinouts and stuff too for the rigging on this
25:16
software yeah so here it shows the the pinouts and uh the center of gravity for
25:23
hanging the the pa um tells it tells the the weight and in the bottom left corner
25:29
there there's an actual QR code that you're supposed to be able to use for the next uh software so this is kind of
25:36
a planning software you go through it uh you try and put in your tolerances and look at it and make sure it's going to
25:42
work yeah and then you uh on site once you get everything in there um I'm got
25:51
click out of here real quick uh you use a different software and this is their performance
25:57
software so here's what this looks like and this is the actual file so this
26:02
is the file we used in the room so here you can so all of these cabinets are
26:08
networked so you run a home run to one of the speakers and then you daisy chain down they all have in and out network
26:15
connections and they uh I'm not sure how they do it but they do claim that they all work together they kind of know
26:21
where each other are they they see each other in this software they know that the top the top speaker is the top and
26:26
the Bottom's the bottom bottom the whole thing thing and so when you're using the software you first connect it up to the
26:32
network make sure that every IP is correct and then you're you build your
26:37
system here grabbing speakers bringing it in and then it connects and sees it all
26:43
yeah and it's it's it worked pretty good so there's a connection screen and from this screen here you can
26:51
create different uh different groups on the left here and then also uh pretty
26:57
quick and easy way way of muting things um so let's take a look here so
27:03
um these are all the different views so I'll go to main so here's our our mute
27:09
Matrix I'm going to go down to this next one this is the tuning one so here is where you can do some gain shading which
27:14
we did um here's our mute M Matrix on this page speak speaker presets so here is
27:22
where you can choose your uh your crossovers uh and it
27:27
also this is where you kind of tell the computer hey hey dude this is an array so do your array magic here bro and uh
27:35
it does it's array magic same with the subs you choose your crossover and
27:40
forward and rear so I guess this is where if you had three of them you could put it into a cardioid yeah it's probably a two over one so it's probably
27:48
one forward in the middle then it's backwards and the top is forward again and that's how you do that so here's our
27:55
speaker presets uh once again gain uh polarity this is helpful for you
28:03
know testing the speakers you know our our installers our dudes are perfect they never make a mistake but other
28:09
places they could pop a cable yeah they could uh swap a swap a cable uh a solder and then
28:17
polari is off right and sound is all about timing phase frequency so if
28:24
something's out of phase it's bad yeah so we do this kind of thing on on any PA that we put in right and every
28:31
manufacturer a lot of or most of them have their own softwares right depending on what we're tuning with but yeah it's
28:37
not people probably don't know we don't just hang speakers up and say you have a new PA right that's part that's a big
28:42
part of it the physical install getting it in there and getting it safe safely in the air and in the right place and
28:47
all that even the right angles during the install but then there's this whole other side that most people probably don't even know what happens Y and it's
28:54
tuning the tuning that room and the that specific PA in that room right and yeah we get sometimes you get stuck with you
29:01
know the software for that manufacturer so like this JBL we hadn't we hadn't used it much at all yeah so you you have
29:09
to just jump in and try to figure out I mean they all kind of are doing the same things and kind of speaks the same language right but yeah that's a big
29:16
it's a huge part of of putting Pas in rooms is the tuning portion and even some on bigger Pas when we do big Pas we
29:24
like L Acoustics will even they'll come out and they'll help tune the room as well yeah come on site and do it so it's
29:29
a it's a huge piece and probably something that a lot of people don't see a lot of right yeah yeah it it's there's
29:37
a whole process um and it's very important to do it in this in the steps
29:43
of the process so like this phase like you have to identify if you have a bad cable or something's out of phase uh
29:49
before you start tun yeah so for those of you who don't know phase is the uh
29:55
the direction of the the uh the the wave the sound wave so whether it's a peak uh
30:03
I'm just destroying this right now my brain's not working uh got to go back to my full cell days so it's either you
30:10
know when a when a speaker pushes out it pushes air air is compressed and we look
30:16
at that you know in in two dimensions and you see a sine wave so when the wave
30:21
is up that means it's a compression when the wave is below the zero volt line it is a refraction so it's the opposite so
30:30
all that speaker is doing is moving and pushing air tighter together and then when you push them together there's a
30:35
vacuum and there's less air less molecules air molecules on the other side and people probably have seen that
30:42
if they ever seen it if they were taking a grill off of a speaker you could I mean obviously you look at a speaker that's your the physical movement it's
30:49
going out and you know it's pushing in and out that's what it's doing yeah all sound is is moving air that's it and
30:56
it's the molecules in the air it's like if you throw a pebble into the into a pond and you see the ripples you just
31:02
see it on the surface that's what sound is but in 3D so if I clap that sound wave is going everywhere going it's like
31:09
the matrix it's like watching the bullets go through the air right and so phase is when is making sure that all of
31:16
those speakers are pushing forward at the same time if one is pushing forward
31:22
and one is pushing backwards they cancel each other out that means out of phase and so at this point we are identifying
31:29
each speaker making sure that they are pushing at the same time and now how do we why would that go wrong why would we
31:35
have something out of phase with a with an array a line array where you have all the speakers together uh the phase
31:43
between them all can only be disrupted or messed up if we mess up a cable right
31:48
if we terminate a cable say this is a passive system well you're talking about two conductors yep um a positive and a
31:55
negative uh conductor if you swap that you still get sound
32:00
through a speaker yeah it just means that instead of pushing forward first you it's sucking back kind of sucking
32:07
back if you want to call that yeah so it's like that so and in this scenario here this is it's an active PA it's a
32:14
little different we're only running one drive line to it right and then it's it's getting Daisy chained down the
32:20
whole PA because all that DSP is inside those speakers we don't have to run a bunch of different lines right but still
32:26
you never know maybe one of those connecting cables is could be bad or something and it's out of phase so phase
32:32
is extremely important so first off is phase in between the speakers right there making sure that all those are are
32:38
are uh performing at the same time right and then we have to also listen to phase
32:45
in between the two speakers you know so maybe yeah we got the drive line to house left right but the drive line to house right is wrong right well now you
32:52
got house left and right going in different right timing as well and then and I showed uh when I was tuning the
32:57
system system I put a whole array out of phase and showed our newbie oh yeah Matthew I'm like hey dude come listen to
33:03
this and we stand in the middle of the room I'm like you hear that and we're just listening to uh we're listening to
33:09
Pink noise yeah so pink noise is what we use to look at equal amplitude of all frequencies according to our ear and we
33:16
use that calibration mic and we look at the speakers and what it sounds like and so he's standing there and it's all in
33:22
phase and then you put it one whole array out of phase and it's like the air
33:28
gets sucked out of your head it's like what it just like who like it knocks you out you're like oh it's the worst
33:35
feeling in the world yeah um and so I'm like showing them that I'm like that's what out of phase sounds like and we are
33:42
and that's the timing that's the timing of those waves right so the first thing we do is check
33:47
phase we check phase in between the uh speakers of the array we check phase in between everything make sure that it all
33:54
the cabling's correct all the speakers are are are punching pushing the right frequencies nothing weird is happening
34:01
that's number one and so this is this is helpful having phase yeah right there poity is another word for
34:08
phase DeLay So delay as well it gives us delay here which is a very important thing uh when speakers are in different
34:15
locations in space you are closer or further away from these speakers right
34:21
once again we want all of these speakers to combine and be pushing the air in the
34:26
same direction at the exact ex act same time so that delay in this scenario we got our
34:32
tops and they are um they are in the air right they're
34:38
further away from you if you're standing on the ground right the subs are on the ground and they're closer to you yeah so
34:44
if you're playing every sound at the exact same time between the two you're going to hear the sub before you hear the tops correct now it's so fast you
34:52
can't really tell but it's out of time yeah it's not right so so we delay the
34:58
subs because they're closer to us and really what we're doing is creating that single wave right boom all those
35:05
frequencies all that wave at the same time and when we do it uh you know there's calculations that we can we can
35:11
make you know the difference in the in the distance between things it's about a
35:16
it's about a foot a millisecond that's the speed of sound but um you got to dial it in and
35:22
there's differences between tenth of a millisecond yeah it's so minute but when
35:27
it's all dialed in oh yeah you can you feel it yeah you you know it yep so you get
35:35
that sense if it's a tiny bit off you might just think it kind of just sounds bad in the room or something like that if you don't really know what's going on
35:41
right um yeah that and there's a lot of timing going on just in the arrays as
35:46
well right from bottom to top yep yeah so we we will TP sometimes we'll use a
35:54
couple mics and we'll look and try and well actually time all that stuff and we'll look at those frequencies and
36:00
we'll time it timeline it that way with the computer the computer has a place in this whole thing but at the end of the day it's your ear and and there's a
36:06
moment where it clicks and you're like oh dang that's it man another thing too is you're in different spots people are in different spots in the room so you
36:12
can't really mix for one exact location but you want to make sure that all those waves are moving together
36:19
y uh and then calibration so this is this has got some fun stuff for the uh
36:25
the array here so there's arrays array size compensation and throw distance
36:31
compensation so these are two things that go along with having multiple speakers working
36:37
together so if we were to look at uh I didn't do any of this um whatever you call I forget what these called it array
36:44
size compensation so this is a way of pulling if I do it you have to do the whole PA or the whole uh stack of four
36:51
speakers and you can bring down some low mids and stuff when you put all these speakers together
36:58
they technically turn into one speaker there's coupling right so you get a lot of low and low mid and mid coupling
37:06
together and it becomes like one big speaker the high frequencies uh less and less coupled
37:13
they are more like laser beams so they shoot and there's no coupling between them they interact with each other right
37:19
anytime you have these different sources and timing and frequency they interact and they'll pull the beams and they they
37:26
that's how we that's how we move move sound with one speaker right or two speakers you can take one speaker and
37:31
another one put them out of timing and you can move and and move the sound around and
37:38
so uh this calibration page uh is supposed to be able to help us dial down
37:44
some of the low mid uh coupling that could happen because we have all these four speakers together
37:49
right and then this part this is the what do they keep calling it throw distance compensation there's like a
37:56
million different names all this stuff man it's annoying but yeah so this here is when we have four speakers 1 2 3 4
38:06
the top speaker is shooting the furthest it's going to the back of the room back the room the next one down is going a
38:13
little less right the next one going down a little less and then the bottom one is your closest speaker to the to the floor to the front row to whatever
38:20
right so between all of those we change gain so that as you get further away
38:26
those top speakers get louder right but a big thing is is uh frequency typically
38:33
with some Pas we don't do any gain shading it's only frequency shading so you are pushing high frequencies on the
38:38
top box because it's going further that laser beam of the high frequencies then coming down the low
38:45
frequen uh the high frequencies uh roll them off roll them roll them off so here's a little bit of high frequency um
38:53
uh control here so as we get closer to the bottom speaker uh we we get more and more high frequency rollof mhm because
39:00
when you're in the front row you don't want to get blasted with laser beams so that's the calibration page
39:06
here and then the EQ so the EQ uh is in these groups uh and that's the EQ that
39:13
was the main group EQ on on on the house left PA the the four
39:20
speakers so I had to I had to dig into it a bit yeah um the room was pretty
39:26
Square so is kind of resonant these low frequencies uh but the highs you know I
39:33
get it some of these speakers they put a good chunk of high in there to try and
39:38
kick through and cut through and get an SPL level or something like that and you know you don't want a doll speaker so I
39:45
guess you you want something there but I had to dial it down a good amount I to dial it down so well that got a little
39:54
nerdy sorry too much internet is that too much for you internet point I mean I mean that's
40:01
why I brought it up because that this is what happens like on every job we do and this is like a
40:07
small yeah this is like a small simple thing but we still go through all these exercises and the science part of it if
40:14
you want to say that yeah you know when we tune the rooms just to make it the best possible in the room for for what
40:20
they have yep and especially with these linay systems because you have so many other options to tune with right versus
40:27
like a point source box so if you guys probably have seen it in your own churches or or whatever if you just have
40:32
a single speaker and you're having to blast it so the so the back part of the room can hear it and the front row is just
40:38
getting hammered by the sound it's because you don't have that separate control you know of just a single
40:43
speaker MH so on these line arrays you get to do all this science and change gains and and frequencies per the array
40:52
so that ideally the sound sounds pretty much the same no matter where you are in the room right that's the whole idea of
40:57
all this whole process coverage yeah coverage and frequency coverage across the room yeah and that's the beauty of
41:04
these of line rrange systems like this right versus just a single speaker up there when you just have to turn that thing on and hope for the best right
41:12
yeah so the idea behind these point source arrays is to really give you that gradient of sound from front to back
41:18
right um it's not just to look cool people right people like we get it sometimes we want the line AR we want a
41:25
line array I'm like well I don't know about your room dude you might need a line array I don't know yeah and if you're a Danley
41:32
dude there's an ongoing joke about Danley speakers and uh being against
41:37
line array they're all single box stuff and we take them out of venues like crazy sorry dley uh okay so this is the
41:46
JBL SRX uh 906 six it's a smaller one I would say
41:55
it's a pretty good sounding speaker I would say it's pretty good for its I was to say put the price tag on it yeah
42:01
versatile yeah you can do a couple different configurations with it it's got the onl the inside DSP inside I
42:08
don't know yeah internal DSP yeah uh the software is pretty
42:13
intuitive we did have a quick issue with one of the versions We had to go through a couple different versions but whatever
42:20
that's typical for and um yeah so I could hear the I
42:26
could hear the sign sound of it for sure like sometimes as you're tuning you want
42:32
you're trying to get a sound right you're kind of like you you listen to it and you go I don't like that part of this sound you're trying to get rid of
42:39
it right sometimes what you're trying to get rid of is baked into the pie on the speaker it's just the sound of the
42:44
speaker it's the signature of the speaker it's whatever the engineering is of the box and the amp and it's
42:51
Crossovers and all that stuff and there's only so much you can do with this these eqs to change it but in this
42:57
scenario the thing was hot in the highs it was just you know it had that and I had to dial it down yeah and then it got
43:04
comfortable and we listen to a couple I listen to a bunch of songs you know it's good when uh we do the tune and then we
43:12
start listening to music right that's that's the key to if you have a good PA
43:17
yep if I tune a system and it's a bad speaker and it ain't it ain't working
43:23
I'm not going to sit around and listen to more music right I'm going to be like oh my goodness I feel beat up I can't
43:28
make this thing sound good it's too cheap a speaker it sounds like crap uh when it's okay like this we ended up
43:35
listen to like a bunch of tracks like oh listen to this oh listen to that we kind of walking around listening to this to the PA yeah that's kind of the result I
43:43
got I think from when I heard him I haven't heard this room yet but heard him before and you just again my brain
43:49
goes to money and for the price right it's pretty D good yep pretty good setup
43:55
yep yeah I liked it so they're they're a good mid uh mid mid speaker um it'll be
44:01
interesting to see I'm you know I'm literally going after this to tune that next system and it'll be the 10 it be
44:08
the 10inch speaker it's still four Pride maybe we'll do I don't know next week is that boring to just do another one of
44:15
these maybe another podcast on it but um I would say that's my review on this
44:20
speaker I like it I think it's I think it's pretty good I think it's versatile and uh I was able to cut out it cut into
44:26
it without losing too much so it had like had enough texture and canvas there to to make things sound good still even
44:34
though I had to cut some stuff out it's it worked yeah and on the other side it's it rigs together really easily
44:41
right um they're powered if you if you like that world so makes it a little easier for you just to throw it together
44:47
yep and they were available so that's always a big thing these days as well these speakers are available pretty
44:53
readily available so you can you can jump on something and do it quick if you wanted to yep the subs I did a little
44:59
bit of tuning that's more the room I mean the subs the subs sounded uh you know they weren't
45:05
super infr low frequency like they weren't like kicking on 30 HZ it was
45:12
like 80 htz it's 80 was its it's uh 80 Herz was where it lived it was just
45:17
Punchy it was Punchy it was good but for this job this application that's it was
45:22
fine it what they needed this is not like they're not B there are old people going there for party and and Big Shows
45:28
but they're not I mean maybe they do do techno Raves or something I don't even know when I was doing when I was doing
45:33
the tuning uh you know we I listen to it at reference I listen to it loud enough
45:39
right I listen to it at a bunch of different levels but I listen to it at reference most the time right and then
45:44
I'll pump it to make sure that we don't break anything right I'll look at the limiters I'll look at the the speakers
45:52
and we'll play like some uh infected mushroom that's us the one did anybody walk in a lot of times we get people to
45:58
poke their head in I about to say people C coming in with worried faces shaking the walls and they're like
46:05
what yeah just like like really crazy uh and I was
46:10
trying to see what the subs are doing I was trying to see where things peek out right just putting it putting the PA through its Paces right making sure
46:17
everything's safe because you never know what some dude's going to deal with the console they could just yeah mess something up and Destroy like everything
46:23
has to have limiters on it to keep it safe yeah and then you know so I was doing that and then all these people
46:29
were coming in like oh my goodness what's going on in here oh my goodness they usually come in during the tuning
46:35
with a pink noise on and they are like scared that the system's blown up or something because you just hear static
46:40
yeah they don't understand and they always come and ask what's going on is it okay and some of
46:46
the songs I listen to are like not church songs right that's yeah unfortunately uh the church music
46:52
industry does not have the greatest audio audio file tracks on Earth the audio file tracks we listen to I'm used
46:58
to uh are mixed a little differently than a lot of stuff they're very clean
47:05
Punchy yeah sharp sometimes uh but you can you really get
47:10
the feel of a PA from them and so yeah I'll throw on some Fel uh you know and
47:15
Travis Scott or something like that right it's you know gets a little scary for old people but you got to hear the
47:22
PA and nowadays there's so many great sounding tracks or just massive Punchy tracks you really get an idea of what
47:28
the what the pa can do so yeah that was the sub um but yeah I got some more
47:34
pictures here you want to see some yeah all right so I showing you some pictures of
47:41
the install this is kind of the final let's take a look oh there it is nice nice picture I love it again we did
47:49
not uh do the lighting we didn't do the lighting but we didn't do anything
47:54
except for the speakers and oh those side the side fil oh yeah those end up going higher so the guys put them at my
48:01
original height but once I was in the room I was like oh we got to raise those and we did those side fills because as
48:06
you can see in the picture they sometimes put seating directly left and right of the stage absolutely they're
48:12
trying to pack trying to pack people in there and they needed that space and so they just decided to do it on those
48:18
wings and they are like a yeah perpendicular from the stage kind of a weird setup but they had to have some
48:24
type of sound over there yep so that's it in all its glory in all its
48:30
Sonic Glory JBL thank you thank you for getting us these speakers in time so
48:36
we can do this it's a good fit yep and then we did training so let me see here this is uh this is our boy Luke wheat um
48:43
American hero Luke's the one with the orange hat
48:49
nope Brown hat Brown hat yeah so he's yeah so he's in the his green attire um
48:56
cam he's trying to blend in there uh yeah this is the Avantis Allen Heath
49:01
Avantis and he's he's training so they were kind of in the Allen Heath World already so they had the GLD and now he's
49:07
they're in the Avantis and the Avantis I don't want to just keep doing product reviews but yeah it's it's one
49:12
of it's one of our favorite it's one of the best bang for your bucks console right now yeah so 64x 64 uh it's got a
49:19
bunch of stuff it's a d it's a babd live right and they have two different versions of it they have the two screen and the one screen called the solo I
49:25
think but we put these in everywhere they sound good the pre the pre- sound good um it's really good for volunteers
49:33
very visual right very tactical you just you know hidden EQ curve and do the
49:39
whole thing though I don't think this works still is all these pictures of the bandwidth pinch I I can't remember if it
49:45
works uh I remember when they first came out with the D lives 2 had a picture of a guy going like this I'm like oh it
49:51
does that and they're like nope guy bad picture that's what you're used to if you have an iPhone right yeah so those
49:57
are the speakers um yeah that was so the
50:02
training went well Luke said that you know they're very um responsive and they had a ton of
50:08
really great questions yeah I had when I was there two different guys came in and said they had downloaded the uh manual
50:17
for the console and have read the whole thing so I mean and they may have cuz
50:23
again this is the elderly community and they're retired and this they this is what they do on the weekends or
50:28
during the week or whatever they come and they get to mix a show or something yeah so they wanted to they wanted to learn it and they were yeah they were
50:36
asking some like legit questions we were like oh they they probably really did read it yeah like this is kind of a
50:42
different it was a little different it wasn't like the standard just normal volunteer that just wants to come in and
50:47
just push faders around like they had they had dug deep on the thing and and
50:52
and really tried to learn it yeah it's fun to mix sound and to to it'll be even more fun for them to mix on this system
50:59
right so if if you have a retired dude coming in to to mix a couple shows during the week that's awesome if you
51:05
can if you can take the crippling critiquing from everyone as a sound guy
51:10
yeah be prepared yeah so this is this is a point I think Luke told me that they
51:16
they were in the middle of rehearsal and then the doors open and everyone just came running that is not the service that is the rehearsal and they just open
51:22
the doors they open the doors but people were there early yep they ready they were so so excited to hear the JBL SRX
51:29
system that they like broke through the doors yeah they pushed it down like we're in here let's listen to it so yeah
51:36
so yeah turned out good man once again
51:42
another successful install it was quick I mean it was one of those where we had to do it in between weekends yep because
51:50
they couldn't be down and honestly we we had to schedule this like months in
51:55
advance because they kept saying they just have so many events and I remember when they first said that I was thinking there's no way that they had this many
52:02
events this is crazy we can't get a we can't get a week to install it but it pushed it way out months and come to
52:08
find out they really do have events like every other night in in the building somewhere um so we had to do it was a
52:15
small I mean it's relatively a small job but still when you under some type of time crunch like this yeah there there's
52:21
a little more pressure involved and getting it done and having enough time to have a rehearsal right have enough
52:26
time to have some training before the weekend happens so the days go really quick for sure yeah when you only have
52:33
one week to do something like the most important thing is like day one you're trying to identify any issues like
52:38
anything you're missing inventory uh find something in the ceiling that messes you up for rigging whatever you
52:45
try and find it as soon as possible so that you have as long as possible to fix
52:50
it yeah we learned that early on by the hard way right yeah you need that time
52:57
first thing you do go on site make sure everything is there everything looks good and you're ready to go especially if they want to have a training
53:02
rehearsal which they did that eats up a whole day yeah so now you only have you know Monday through Thursday to get
53:07
everything done and working y so goes quick right so yeah that was it yeah
53:15
cool little job cool little job and I think the next room is going to be cooler honestly it's a it's a I mean
53:21
this is a little pre preview to it but it's a hard tough man hard hard hard room to work hard room to work in hard
53:27
room to design it's tough yeah but we use the bigger speakers in here so we haven't heard those yet I'm about to
53:33
hear them um so we'll see if they have more you know bigger body to them or whatever yeah um we did a bunch of
53:39
lighting a ton of new Lighting in this new room like a lot um their whole entire lighting system came out and we
53:45
did a lot of lighting and new console new mics as well so a bunch of stuff's
53:51
happening in the same amount of time more stuff in a really hard room to work in
53:56
um specialty lifts and the whole thing to work around pews Cherry Pickers yeah
54:03
so it's going well as of now it's Thursday so we got another day one more

54:49
there um we sell enough we sell enough of their products man that's true they we're friends with China we got a little
54:55
a small argument that started on our Tik Tok about doing production in churches oh really yeah so we got a lot of extra
55:01
plays on a video what they say this is a mega church you say it's not a mega church this is a mega church
55:09
oh because we said it wasn't which one it was that New Hope they're like what and then it's all
55:14
about you know churches should be taxed and it got into a I was I was egging
55:20
them on a little bit I was like No we're going to post some mega church videos soon and you'll see a mega church you
55:26
know this is a great church but it's not a mega church I kind of agree churches should probably be taxed but then I
55:32
agree that no one should be taxed correct so it's like you can't the government's picking winners and losers
55:38
and I get it I get it churches help the community and stuff so you're kind of offsetting that we help churches so we
55:45
shouldn't be taxed then amen I mean anyway all right so yeah hit us up on social media and Ed the End the
55:52
